Over several decades, I have bought several atlases, but ended up rarely using them. They lacked sufficient detail, omitted recent innovations, or had illustrations that contributed little to understanding. This is the first atlas that is actually useful to a practicing surgeon or resident. It includes discussion of salient points by experts and combines illustrations with photographic images. The descriptions of laparoscopic procedures is up to date, as are the procedures for traditional approaches. Best of all, it includes a link for free inkling version, so one can review procedures on a smart phone or tablet prior to procedures.
Excellent book for surgical residency. Also comes with e-version via Inkling and buying the physical copy is cheaper.

These book Operative Techniques in surgery edition is in two volumes, I received volume two only. when will be volume one deliver?.
This is the most current atlas/ and text on General Surgery procedures. A step by step approach is used. Head and Neck, abdominal, thoracic, hernias, and some vascular procedures are covered. Line drawings and IO photographs going into the details of both robotic, laparoscopic, and open approaches are covered. The instrumentation is well done. Indications, complications, management, and medical treatment post op are included. This is a good atlas for PGY1 and PGY2 residents in general surgery. The minimally invasive approaches are covered, Liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, stomach diseases are all covered. Bariatric surgery has a coverage as well. Mediastinoscopy, thymectomy, cricothyrotomy, thyroid cancer surgery is also included. Kidney & urological surgery has a place in the discussion also.
I thought this was a really helpful textbook for general surgeons, particularly upper-level residents and fellows. It gives a great amount of detail on each operation without being too dense. It also does a great job not just explaining "how" to do each step but "why".The format of the chapters is consistent and easy to follow, with preoperative setup including patient positioning, equipment concerns, and draping. The level of detail is perfect for a senior resident preparing for cases. The accompanying intraoperative pictures are high quality and help delineate the relevant anatomy.This textbook fills a big void - there are not enough good atlases/procedural textbooks and this one is comprehensive and easy to follow. I think this will be an outstanding resource for general surgery residents.
