About the Author
Rob Brooker (Ph.D., Yale University) received his B.A. in biology at Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio, in 1978. At Harvard, he studied lactose permease, the product of the lacY gene of the lac operon. He continues working on transporters at the University of Minnesota, where he is a Professor in the Department of Genetics, Cell Biology, and Development and has an active research laboratory. At the University of Minnesota, Dr. Brooker teaches undergraduate courses in biology, genetics, and cell biology. In addition to many other publications, he has written two undergraduate genetics texts published by McGraw-Hill: Genetics: Analysis & Principles, 4th edition, copyright 2012, and Concepts of Genetics, copyright 2012.

Eric P. Widmaier received his Ph.D. in 1984 in Endocrinology from the University of California at San Francisco. His postdoctoral training was in endocrinology and physiology at the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology, and The Salk Institute in La Jolla, CA. He is currently Professor of Biology at Boston University.

Linda Graham is Professor of Botany and Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She received her Ph.D. in Botany from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She has taught a nonmajors plant biology course each year for more than 20 years. She also teaches courses on the biology of algae and bryophytes, contributes to an introductory biology course for majors, and has taught marine botany on a remote tropical island.

Peter Stiling is a professor of biology at the University of South Florida at Tampa. He has taught classes in ecology, environmental science, and community ecology, and in 1995 he received a teaching award in recognition of classroom excellence in these areas. Dr. Stiling obtained his Ph.D. from University College, Cardiff, Wales, and completed postdoctoral research at Florida State University.

One thing you have to know about this book is that the designs are at least 12 years old (as of 2018). A lot of work was curated, and its not for everyone, but its a great reference to other designs and typography that its worth getting. For the age of the designs, I say some of it can still work in todays brand identity systems. 4-Stars because mine came used with some scuffs.

Although the layout is beautiful and the book design is clean, this book is not what I expected. The logos seem dated and too trendy. There is no innovative thinking behind these logo marks, and the only information given about the logo is the name of the firm (frustrating when the logo is only a symbol) which is why I returned te book. I'm sure some designers can get use out of this, but I personally like more information and and more thought process when I buy design reference books.

If you are looking for a book that contains independent thinking and significant design work, this book may disappoint you. It disappointed me because the work itself is consistently immature and underdeveloped, amounting to a mediocre collection of almost amateur logos. In this book I see some good work, but it is the minority, so perhaps a stricter selection criteria would have contributed to a better final product. I'm ok with the dated content, in fact I enjoy quality dated design and that is why I bought this book in 2016, the problem however is that there is very little quality in here.

I bought this book used and it was in great condition. The logos were beautiful and inspirational. As others have noted I wish there were explanations about the logos. I think that comes in their later books. It was much thicker than I thought. Over all wonderful book! I will most likely buy the rest of the series.

In our rapidly changing, globally expanding world, key challenges and problems revolve around fundamental issues in ethics. Leadership in such a world demands courage, commitment, character and good ethical reasoning skills to address these challenges head on. With the eleventh edition of Ethics: Theory and Practice I wish to acknowledge the significant contributions made by all involved in the teaching of ethics courses who engage students with the core issues of our time.

 

Ethics: Theory and Practice is utilized by many professors in their ethics courses and I invite you to review the eleventh edition. The book is divided into eight chapters of ethical theory balanced by eight chapters of applied ethics. It also includes eight appendices. The text is comprehensive, and each chapter features a chapter summary, many exercises with suggestions for paper topics and ethics projects, and a list of discussion questions and an ethics problem. And I perceive he is motivated to do so both because he cares and he appreciates that this lack of discrete definability is precisely what many sufferers in the West need, but which prevents them from finding relief.The language of Buddhism can be difficult, in part, because there are so many exotic terms used in its ancient teachings. But these terms are not exotic so much as they are merely unfamiliar and I suggest you largely ignore them. And Mr. Rasheta will help. He doesn’t ignore them but he does marginalize their importance for native English speakers.I like to explain how by using the example of an old tree sitting high up in a mountainous meadow. The tree is real. I can touch it. I can smell it. I can hear the rustle of its leaves. I could even cut it down if I wanted. I can’t, however, “know” the tree. The tree is a product of the things within itself but it is also the product of the climate, the altitude, the soil, the trees and vegetation around it, and an infinite variety of other variables that contribute to defining that tree, and all of which are constantly changing. I can only know that everything is interconnected; to know the tree is impossible, but the tree is real.Buddhists talk a lot about suffering. And there is plenty of suffering in the world today. But like the tree, we cannot truly know suffering unless we embrace the arrogance that would allow us to think we can truly know it. We all suffer but there is no reason to truly embrace it. And as soon as you don’t, whether it’s in meditation or reading a very good book like this one, you can hold that suffering at a distance. Fantastic Book. As a neurologist, I have spent the past three years studying and understanding many mindfulness and acceptance techniques that have their foundation in Buddhism and have been clinically proven to have pervasive health benefits. Principles of Secular Buddhism can be applied by anyone, regardless of religious belief.

Originally, I downloaded a sample of the book. I didn't get that much out of the sample. After completing the sample there was some information about a podcast by the author. I decided to give it a listen while working around the house. The style of the podcast was very easy to listen to. I ended up listening to several. After that, I purchased his book. Many of the items in this book were covered in episodes of the podcasts. My only regret is that it was such an easy read, it over too soon. I will continue to listen to Noah Rasheta's podcasts and certainly consider purchasing other books recommended by him.

This book is a MUST read for anyone even remotely interested in learning about the core concepts of Buddhism. It is also a useful reference book for any new practioner of the Buddhist path, to help brush up on their knowledge, or even for use as an easy access source to draw upon and share with others interested in learning. The question and answer format that Noah uses, makes it extremely easy to bookmark and find any answers you are looking for expediently, without having to dig deep through various texts and complicated wording. He uses a clear cut, straight forward approach in his explanations, utilizing very easy to understand, real world examples and analogies that make learning about Buddhism an enjoyable experience. This book is truly capable of inspiring one to delve further and learn more. Excellent follow up resource or even pre-read to his first book, which we also highly recommend.

As a new interest into Buddhism this was the first book I purchased to educate my self and answer most of the questions I had. I read the entire book in one setting while. This was an amazing resource for people looking into becoming Buddhist

Wish I'd had this book a long time ago. I've read various books like Siddhartha, Old Path White Clouds, etc. which I enjoyed but I got bogged down in the unfamiliar words and various "schools" of Buddhism. (My Western mind asks "which is the best?") The level of detail in this book is perfect for the beginner and for the still-confused non-beginner, and it answers the questions that pop into my mind about the language as well as a bit about why there are different "schools" and some of the differences.

This second edition capitalizes on comments and suggestions collected over 5 years from world-wide readers. A warm "merci" to all of you! There are several key additions such as a small-signal model of the active clamp forward converter or the ac-response analysis of the QR flyback converter. Small-signal transfer functions of BCM PFC stages are also there, in current mode or voltage mode. Another important addition is the derivation of all rms currents (with a step-by-step approach so that you can follow the flow) of the three basic cells when operated in CCM but also in DCM. Results are presented in a clear and ordered form, also available in dedicated Mathcad files for those of you who want to put these equations at work. This book is for engineers who believe, as I do, that SPICE or simulation in general, can be an excellent assistant in intermediate design steps before going to the bench. About the Author
Christophe Basso is an Application Engineering Director at ON Semiconductor in Toulouse, France, where he leads an application team dedicated to developing new offline PWM controllers specifications. He has originated numerous integrated circuits among which the NCP120X series has set new standards for low standby power converters. Further to his 2008 book "Switch-Mode Power Supplies: SPICE Simulations and Practical Designs", published by McGraw-Hill, he released a new title in 2012 with Artech House, "Designing Control Loops for Linear and Switching Power Supplies: a Tutorial Guide". He holds 30 patents on power conversion and often publishes papers in conferences and trade magazines including How2Power and PET. He regularly teaches professional seminars at APEC conferences in the US.

Christophe has over 20 years of power supply industry experience. Prior to joining ON Semiconductor in 1999, Christophe was an application engineer at Motorola Semiconductor in Toulouse. Before 1997, he worked as a power supply designer at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble, France, for 10 years. He holds a BSEE equivalent from the Montpellier University (France) and a MSEE from the Institut National Polytechnique of Toulouse (France). He is an IEEE Senior member.

I'm very excited with this purchase. Emily Coleman has out done herself with this book. Mind you, this is not a book with step by step instructions on how to make a dragon or a griffin. Instead Ms. Coleman shares her techniques on how to decide on a pose, how to make the armature of your choice, how to attach the armature to a wooden base if need be, how to block in the clay, etc. She gives detailed instructions on how to sculpt various animal and bird faces, hands, feet, fur, hair and feathers. This book is just what I needed. I have a lot of ideas but didn't know how to execute them. She even explains how to make detailed, feathered wings and wings with membranes. She also explains what tools will be needed and the last section on her painting techniques is priceless. I can't say enough good things about this book. Highly recommended!

As other reviews have stated, this guide is for both beginning and experienced sculptors, but not beginning artists. You will need to know some anatomy, color theory, and a have little bit of drawing ability to be able to fully appreciate the information contained within. However, the book does contain convenient references to other websites and books that will help you somewhat. Some tutorials are step-by-step and teach you how to create something very specific, which is helpful but doesn't always give you a deeper understanding of how to do the process once on your own. Fantasy Creatures in Clay instead teaches skills and techniques and shows you how to go about using them. It encourages you to practice them on your own until they become instinctive instead of promising some quick way to learn how to sculpt. In that respect it may prove daunting to new sculptors, but rest assured it does give you the information you need to get started and build your abilities.The guide is beautiful to behold with large and detailed illustrations as well as clear instructions to help you follow along. It is also set up in such a way that referencing it at any stage of your sculpture for help is very and easy allows you to troubleshoot your creation without wasting time. The "field guide" theme and little visual touches such as the field notes make it entertaining and a little more engaging while you are reading. The size and quality of this guide make it quite a bargain at the current price and it would still be worth it near list price.If you or someone you know is getting into sculpting or have been sculpting for a while and just need some techniques to up your game, this guide will prove invaluable to you.

I am a polymer clay beginner and this book really helped me. It breaks down the steps for armature and how to strengthen your design, and tips on how to achieve certain looks. Highly recommended.

I gave this book 4 stars because although good, it is not what I was expecting. While the author walks us through details of the creating process for fantasy creatures, this is NOT a tutorial book where you can create any of the figures on the front or back. Rather it goes into the detailing process of creating figures. It is the readers job to come up with an idea & execute it. While it is a good book, it is NOT for beginners. I was hoping for a few more techniques on the finer stuff but very helpful as an overall tutorial. I did learn a few things in here that I just hadn't thought of yet. Overall, I am very pleased with the book and the art is amazing. I believe this is a good book for beginners and some who may need a few pointers. Very clear to understand with wonderful pictures for example.

Interesting book on sculpting and covers a lot of ground most books gloss over assuming you have experience. The author goes through the into detail about planning armatures and even offers tips for making wings and stronger armatures. As well the tips are good for both Sculpey and the amazing Monster Clay from Monster Makers, and even covers painting the finished works!

A good, simple introduction to small to medium sized clay sculpture. The author has a particular fondness for polymer clays- and mentions other media in the text. All of the techniques can be applied to other media (ceramic, air drying, oil-based clays, epoxy clays, etc.) The painting directions are also helpful.

While it's probably a great read for those looking to do this sort of work, I didn't find it useful. Great pictures though and the writer seems to really know their stuff.
